More than simply abstract, the paintings of Lorenzo Conforti (Tolentino, 1996; lives in Milan and Tolentino) can be described as anti-figurative. Departing from today’s notion of an “easy,” unidirectional, flat image, the artist—who trained at the Brera and Urbino Academies—creates forms that are “slow, sensory, and layered, evoking reminiscences of figurative elements by focusing on sensation rather than description.”

The process begins with fragments of pre-existing images that are fused together, losing their identity and function. From this conceptual phase, the artist moves on to drawing and finally to the actual painting—a carefully balanced mix of oil and spray paint. This leads into a dimension composed of “hypothetical” volumes and voluptuous lines that are at once evanescent and substantial. “Rhythm and harmony are fundamental components, stemming from my experience as a musician. I myself do not know the final direction of the work until I reach that definitive point of balance, which varies from piece to piece.”
